The celebration of food is what drives us

Food Was Celebrated

We love and celebrate food! Food is magnificent on so many levels. Food is fuel for our bodies. When we eat, we give our bodies what they need to work properly and stay healthy. Just think about some of the practical benefits of eating food:

  • Energy: Foods like carbohydrates (found in bread, rice, pasta) and fats (found in oils, butter) give us energy to get things done. It is what keeps us moving – literally.
  • Building Blocks: Foods with protein (like meat, beans, eggs) help our bodies build and repair, for instance muscles and organs. They’re the bricks and cement that build our body.
  • Vitamins and Minerals: Foods like fruits and veggies give us important vitamins and minerals that help our bodies with more complex tasks, like keeping our immune system strong or helping our bones stay healthy.
  • Water: Yes, water! It helps our bodies to digest food and keep our skin healthy. 45 to 75% of our body is water!

But it brings more than practical value. It brings bliss. Food is a symphony of flavours, textures, and aromas that captivate our senses. It brings people together, fostering connections and bonds beyond language and borders. Whether it’s a simple meal shared with family or an elaborate feast with friends, food has a remarkable ability to create moments of joy and intimacy. Moreover, food is a reflection of our diverse world. Every culture has its own culinary traditions, techniques, and ingredients, each telling a story of heritage and history. From the delicate Izakaya Japanese pub-style food to the comforting pastas of Italy, food is a portal to different cultures, allowing us to explore and appreciate the richness of the world and everybody and everything in it.

Turbulence and insecurity

However lately talking about food almost always leads to intense discussions. And there is a lot to talk about!

  • Sustainability and the Environment: With growing concerns about climate change and environmental degradation, discussions around food sustainability have gained significant traction. Topics include the environmental impact of food production, the rise of plant-based diets as a means to reduce carbon emissions, and the importance of supporting local and organic agriculture. These discussions drive consumer behaviour and influence industry practices towards more sustainable food systems.
  • Nutrition and Health: One of the most prominent discussions revolves around nutrition and its impact on health. Debates range from the benefits of different diets (like vegan, keto, or Mediterranean) to discussions about food additives, GMOs, and the role of processed foods in our diets. These conversations influence public policy, food labelling, and individual dietary choices, ultimately impacting public health outcomes.
  • Food Politics and Economics: Food discussions often intersect with politics and economics, shaping policies related to agriculture, food production, and trade. Debates around food subsidies, food industry regulation, and international food aid highlight the complex interplay between government, businesses, and consumers in shaping food systems and economies.
  • Food Justice and Equity: Discussions around food justice focus on addressing disparities in access to healthy and affordable food, particularly in marginalized communities. This includes conversations about food deserts (areas with limited access to fresh, nutritious food), food insecurity, and the social determinants of health. Advocates work towards policies and initiatives that promote food equity and empower communities to access healthy food options.

These and other food-related discussions are critical and need to be held. However, food feels very personal and when someone feels that their beliefs or way of life is being challenged, they may become defensive or resistant to alternative perspectives, leading to a breakdown in constructive dialogue. Additionally, the spread of misinformation and the influence of vested interests can intensify tensions, making it difficult to find common ground or compromise. As a result, discussions about food can devolve into rigid ideological battles, hindering progress towards shared goals such as promoting health, sustainability, and social justice.

Let’s get back to celebrating

Food deserves to be celebrated and we want to help that happen again. We truly believe that open and constructive dialogues play a crucial role in addressing the complex issues surrounding food and fostering a healthier relationship with what we eat. By creating spaces where diverse perspectives are respected and ideas are exchanged freely, we can cultivate understanding, empathy, and collaboration. These dialogues enable us to explore innovative solutions to challenges such as food insecurity, unsustainable agricultural practices, and inequitable access to nutritious food. Moreover, open discussions allow us to rediscover the joy and pleasure of food and traditions that bring us together around the table. By embracing openness, curiosity, and mutual respect in our conversations about food, we can create a more inclusive, sustainable, and enjoyable food system for all.
