According to research in 2021 from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, the food system accounts for over a 3rd of the global greenhouse gas emissions as it was estimated at 26% in 2018. This places it on par with, or even surpassing, other major contributors such as the transportation sector.

The expansion of agricultural land, driven by the demand for food commodities such as soy, palm oil, and cattle pasture, is a leading cause of deforestation – even compared to all other industries and causes combined. Forests, vital carbon sinks and biodiversity hotspots, are cleared to make way for monoculture crops and grazing lands, resulting in habitat loss for countless plant and animal species.
Intensive farming practices, including monoculture farming and excessive use of agrochemicals, degrade soil health and fertility over time.
