That is our promise

The Problem

It is very simple: We (humans) use more resources then the earth can recover.

The Stockholm Resilience Centre has created a very clear visualisation of where we stand. Green is what the earth can recover. Red is what we use more then that.

Consequence: Our resources will run out. And with it, our food will run out as well!

What? No more food?

That’s right. No more food. Scary isn’t it? And what is baffling, the food we are eating today causes about 30% of the total impact.

It doesn’t stop here. We are with more of us every day. We’ll eat more, need more space and energy.

We have created a downward spiral.

So, we are doomed?

Not at all. Not if we change!

Farmers, scientists and lots of other people are working to optimise the food production and bring it more into balance.

This proves to be a good but difficult and slow process. They are pushing changes as fast as they can, but if we pull, it would speed thing up enormously! They cannot do it alone. We should all work together.

Ok. Who should help?

That is actually very promising: The 30% richest people (yes, that is you!) on the earth, cause 70% of the food related impact. (src)

These are people that are easy to reach, have the means to change and over 65% of them are willing to change.

That accounts for more then 10% of the climate impact. That is 10% of the total impact – not just food impact.

If we didn’t have to limit climate impact, that would be food for an additional 800 million people. Just by changing our eating habits.

Wow! What can we do?

Well, that seems a bit more complex.

You should choose food that generates less CO2 and other greenhouse gasses, uses less land, water, pesticides and other damaging chemicals, use more local races, which are local produced in a biological and regenerative way. Oh, and in season. Besides this, obviously nothing can be wasted. Use peels and trimmings and stuff. Store to improve shelf life and cook with what is available.

Clear?

Uhm, what?

I know, right? That is why most people are willing but not actually changing.

Are you making me a vegetarian?

Not if you do not want to. You would be amazed what you can accomplice with more variation, some changes in ingredients and portion size. And the best thing: it will be delicious.

But if you would like to eat vegetarian or even vegan by default, without loosing the joy of the taste – we ’ll make that happen. Even with an occasional cheat meal escape. It is important is your average.

You can take full control or give us the lead. All you have to do is say “Yes” or “No” to our proposals and we’ll proceed, or offer alternatives based on your personal preference.
