What is Leaf Cost?
Short answer: The Leaf Cost is Climate Impact Quantified.
Of a recipe, meal or your weekly consumption.

This Is Leaf Cost
Think of it as nature’s currency — the climate cost of food in one comparable unit.
It is not a Euro or Dollar, but a Leaf Coin. A single value that makes ingredients, recipes, and meals comparable and easy to evaluate.
One number, real comparison.

This Is Included
The land used, the water used and the greenhouse gases generated.
In the future, other climate impact factors will be included, but this is already a powerful simplification. All based on the Planetary Boundaries.
One number, full impact.

This Is Acceptable
Everything is referenced against the Planetary Health Diet.
Yellow marks the point that is acceptable according to the Planetary Health Diet. Red is worse and green is better. In the future, you will be able to choose your own reference and a range will be indicated to account for industrial vs sustainable production, but this is real.
Let’s aim for green.

These are the references
EAT-Lancet and RIVM are authoritative sources.
EAT-Lancet for the Planetary Health Diet and the Planetary Boundary overshoot; RIVM is our first source of nutrition and climate impact data.
No guessing. Real, sourced, traceable numbers.

Climate Impact But Simple
Everything combined. Everything transparent. No effort.
A single system that calculates the climate impact of any recipe, meal or meal plan. Portion sizing is taken into account. The calculation model is implemented. Next step is to build recipe submission – so anyone can add their own.
